Die-cut, kiss-cut, and transfer-cut options

The cut style changes how pieces are separated from the liner, how they’re handled during install, and how the finished graphic looks on the surface. Pick the method that fits your layout and application plan.

Quick contrast: die-cut yields separate shapes; kiss-cut leaves each piece on a carrier sheet; transfer-cut lets you lay lettering or simple graphics without a background film.

Example of die-cut vinyl

Die-cutting goes through both the face film and backing so each shape is fully separated—like a cookie cutter around your outline. That gives a clean edge on the vehicle, window, or wall and suits detailed art and lettering.

* Please note – Back Slit (Crack and Peel) is only available on our Standard and Permanent material options *

Example of kiss-cut vinyl

Kiss-cutting scores the face film only and leaves the paper liner intact, leaving a border you can grip during placement. Graphics stay on one sheet until you peel them—handy for multiples or precise positioning.

Example of transfer-cut vinyl

Transfer-cut work trims the graphic, weeds away excess film, and adds tape so multiple elements install as one unit. It fits text and simpler artwork; supply vector art (EPS or AI).

Transfer-cut pricing includes 8 standard picks with a maximum of 40 picks per square foot. Additional picks range from $0.02 to $0.04 depending on complexity. Intricate designs may require a custom quote based on picking difficulty and time.

Artwork and file requirements

Clean files mean accurate color, sharp edges, and cuts that match your intent. Use the guidelines below so production and proofing go smoothly.

Preferred files (vector)

Vector art is best for print and cut. Submit Illustrator EPS or PDF when possible. Maximum upload size is 100 MB. Convert fonts to outlines (curves) before sending so nothing swaps at the printer.

Raster files we accept

For photos or highly detailed layouts, high-resolution JPG, TIFF, or PNG work. Size the file proportionally to the finished dimensions so detail holds up in print.

Setup checklist

Build at the correct proportion for the size you’re ordering. Outline all type. Add bleed only where the design requires it. In PSDs, avoid flattening—keep layers separate when we need production flexibility. Mark cut lines clearly so trimming matches your layout.

Transfer-cut guidelines

Transfer-cut jobs need room to weed and register on the surface. Use open, simple fonts with text at least 1/2" tall. Keep at least 1/8" between letters and shapes. Line weights and elements should be at least 1/8" thick; minimum pick size is 1/8". On complex layouts, request a proof so we can confirm feasibility.

Disclaimers:

  • Transfer-cut pricing includes 8 standard picks with a maximum of 40 picks per sq. ft.
  • Additional picks run $0.02–$0.04 each, based on difficulty.
  • Very intricate work may be quoted separately for picking time.

Vector art (overview)

Vectors are math-based paths—lines and curves—not a fixed grid of dots. That’s why logos and type stay crisp at large sizes. In outline/keyline view you’ll see anchors along paths; quality doesn’t depend on PPI the way raster does.

Raster art (overview)

Raster files are grids of pixels. Zoom past 200% and you’ll see those squares; upsizing beyond what the capture supports looks soft or blocky. Upscaling software guesses new pixels from neighbors—fine in moderation, muddy if the source is too small.

For raster submissions, aim for:

  • 100% scale (full-size output) at 100 dpi
  • 50% scale at 200 dpi or higher
  • 25% scale at 300 dpi or higher
  • 10% scale at 600–1200 dpi recommended

Design services

No print-ready file yet? We offer vectorizing and redraws—many logos start around $15; heavier detail may need a quote first. Contact sales for specifics.

Pay for artwork services before we print. We keep rebuilt vector files on hand for your future orders. Release of final art files for your own use is available for an additional fee.

Shipping and delivery

Transit time is separate from production time—plan for both when you need graphics in hand by a fixed date.

  • After production: most U.S. addresses see delivery in about **2–4 business days** for roughly 90% of the country (carrier and destination dependent).
  • Unless you choose otherwise at checkout, standard outbound service is **UPS Ground**.
  • Questions on rates or rush manufacturing? Call customer service at **(320) 391-5250** before you order.
  • You’ll get **tracking** when the package leaves our facility.
  • Full details: shipping policy.

Service levels

  • Economy (5–15 days)
  • Standard (3–5 business days)
  • Three Day (3 business days)
  • Two Day (2 business days)
  • Overnight (1 business day)

Economy shipping notes

  • If you use economy service, put P.O. Box or suite details in **Address line 2** so carriers can complete delivery.
  • Economy can add roughly **5–10 days** depending on destination—budget extra time.

Domestic and international

  • We ship across the **United States** and to many **international** locations.
  • International: you supply **shipping labels** and **customs paperwork**. We accept international labels from **USPS** and **UPS** only.
  • For international questions, call **(320) 391-5250**.

Installation overview

A careful install improves looks and how long the graphic stays down. Work slowly, keep the piece aligned, and push air out as you go.

Basic steps

  1. Clean the surface; let it dry fully.
  2. Tack the graphic in place with masking tape so nothing shifts.
  3. Peel the liner while keeping the film aligned to the surface.
  4. From the center outward, squeegee firm strokes to seat the adhesive.
  5. If you used tape, remove it slowly at a shallow angle.
  6. Seal edges with light pressure so they lie flat.

Custom Vinyl Decals FAQ Return to Top

What material is used for custom vinyl decals?

Custom vinyl decals are manufactured using premium vinyl films designed for both indoor and outdoor applications. The vinyl material features a durable face film with permanent or removable adhesive backing, providing excellent weather resistance and color retention for long-term use.

What's the difference between die-cut, kiss-cut, and transfer-cut decals?

Die-cut decals are cut completely through vinyl and backing for individual pieces, kiss-cut decals are cut only through vinyl leaving backing intact, and transfer-cut decals have excess vinyl removed with transfer tape applied for multi-piece installation. Each method offers different handling and application benefits.

Can I upload my own design for custom decals?

Yes, you can upload your own artwork files for professional printing on vinyl material. We accept EPS, PDF, JPG, TIFF, and PNG formats with a maximum file size of 100 MB. Vector files provide the best quality for cutting and printing applications.

How large can custom vinyl decals be made?

Custom vinyl decals can be produced in virtually any size from small detailed graphics to large format applications. Our production equipment accommodates both precision small decals and oversized graphics for vehicle wraps, wall graphics, and commercial signage applications.

Are custom vinyl decals waterproof?

Yes, custom vinyl decals are waterproof and designed for outdoor durability. The vinyl material and adhesive system resist moisture, UV exposure, and temperature variations, making them suitable for vehicles, outdoor signage, and weather-exposed applications.

What surfaces work best for vinyl decal application?

Custom vinyl decals adhere best to clean, smooth, non-porous surfaces like glass, metal, plastic, and painted surfaces. Textured or porous surfaces may require special adhesive options or surface preparation for optimal adhesion and longevity.

How do I remove air bubbles from vinyl decals during installation?

Remove air bubbles by working from the center outward with firm, smooth pressure using a squeegee or application tool. For stubborn bubbles, use a needle to create a small hole and press out the trapped air.
