A machine safety decal is only as useful as it is readable. ANSI Z535.4 provides specific layout guidelines that OSHA compliant machine decals should follow. Understanding these design principles helps you produce labels that will hold up under inspection.
Signal Word Panel: The signal word (DANGER, WARNING, CAUTION, or NOTICE) appears in a distinct header panel in the appropriate signal color. The word is set in uppercase, in a bold sans-serif typeface, at a size readable from the operator's normal working distance.
Hazard Pictogram: A symbol communicating the nature of the hazard (electrical bolt, hand-crush symbol, flame, and similar) appears prominently. Internationally recognized pictograms matter because they communicate instantly across language barriers, ensuring every worker on the floor understands the hazard regardless of reading ability or native language. ISO 11684 symbols are widely recognized and accepted.
Message Text: A brief description of the specific hazard and the consequence of ignoring it, followed by instructions to avoid the hazard. Text should be direct and concrete. Passive phrasing or vague warnings do not meet the intent of ANSI standards.
Legibility and Text Height: The message must be readable from a safe viewing distance, before the worker is close enough to be exposed to the hazard. A widely used rule of thumb calls for character height of at least 0.12 inches for every foot of viewing distance, so a label meant to be read from ten feet away needs text roughly 1.2 inches tall. ANSI Z535.4 provides the full sizing formula based on viewing distance and lighting conditions.
Color Contrast: Background color follows ANSI signal word color coding. Text and symbols must contrast sharply against the background. Avoid color combinations that lose readability under poor lighting.
